Student Composer Features
Leading up to this Wednesday's Student Composer Concert we though we would start a new tradition: Student Composer Features! The aim of these blog posts is to help people get to know our talented student composers and to give them a chance to talk about their pieces.
First up: Maria Kouznetsova!
First up: Maria Kouznetsova!
Maria Kouznetsova, Sonata for 2 Pianos
Tell us a bit about your piece in this Wednesday's Student Composer concert and what it means to you.
"Sonata for 2 pianos is the first piece I am really, truly proud of. In it, I explored harmony (especially the augmented kind) and motivic development. I have been fascinated by augmented chords and similar non-traditional harmonies for a few years, so I jumped at the chance to write a piece featuring them when the opening theme of the first movement popped into my head."
Why did you decide to write this piece?
"Funny story: I started all three movements in second year composition. Up until that point, I had written two pieces for unaccompanied solo instruments (flute, viola). My composition professor told me that my next piece had to be for more than one instrument; thus came the decision to write for two pianos."
A big thanks to Maria for telling us about Sonata for 2 Pianos. Her piece will be premiering at the Student Composer Concert this Wednesday, November 19th at 8pm in the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall at Wilfrid Laurier University. Come out to hear Maria's piece as well as new compositions by many other Laurier student composers! Join the Facebook event here.
