Dylann Miller, Frozen in a Pool Beneath the Sea
Tell us a bit about your piece being premiered in this Student Composer Concert and how it came to be.
"I composed Frozen in a Pool Beneath the Sea because I wanted to experiment with a different type of compositional process than I usually use. So, rather than having a compositional idea and mapping out the structure ahead of time, I decided to jump right in and let whatever comes out, come out. I also wanted to explore the idea of having a tonal piece embellished with some chromaticism and dissonance to bring these worlds together. The aim was to create something crunchy but still beautiful. Having different sections within the piece and the use of contrast were also goals I had in mind while composing. And so, this is how my piece came to be, and it was something I really enjoyed creating!"
What inspired you to compose this piece and why did you choose choir as your medium?
"Frozen in a Pool Beneath the Sea took inspiration from my life's current state mostly in terms of the music, with the text representing more of an emotional state. I chose choir because it is my favourite and most comfortable composing medium."
A big thanks to Dylann for telling us about her composition, Frozen in a Pool Beneath the Sea, which will be premiering at today's Student Composer Concert at 8pm in the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall at Wilfrid Laurier University.
